MUNICIPALITY BRINGS JOY TO CHILDREN ON MADIBA DAY

MUNICIPALITY BRINGS JOY TO CHILDREN ON MADIBA DAY

Councillors as well as municipal workers of Mossel Bay chose to bring joy to children, the homeless and women on Friday, 16 July 2010, as their 67 minutes of community service in honour of Mr Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela Day was launched on 18 July 2009 to celebrate his birthday on that date. A call was made to individuals, entities and bodies to take responsibility for changing the world for the better, one step at a time and through individual and collective actions, just as he did for more than 67 years of community service.

The Executive Mayor, Alderlady Marie Ferreira, the Executive Deputy Mayor, Councillor Harry Levendal and Mayoral Committee member, Councillor Eleanor Domingo, the Municipal Manager, Dr Michele Gratz, and the personnel of the 6 directorates of the Mossel Bay Municipality dedicated their 67 minutes to children at 14 crèches as well as treating homeless people in Mossel Bay and eleven women in Herbertsdale.

The children and others were treated in a variety of ways and toys donated by personnel were handed out at the crèches. The other activities were also financed from personal donations by the Councillors and municipal personnel.

The Municipal Manager, Dr Michele Gratz, said the Municipality supports Nelson Mandela Day fully, and also participated in 2009.

“By getting involved in this initiative we are not only trying to give recognition in a small way to what Mr Mandela has achieved but we also felt that in view of his compassion for children, directing our efforts at children would be the most appropriate way of honouring him on his birthday, “said the Municipal Manager, Dr Michele Gratz.
